Self Control – Laura Branigan

Album: Self Control
Released: 1984
Charted: 4 US 5 UK

Oh the night is my world
City light painted girl
In the day nothing matters
It’s the night time that flatters
In the night, no control
Through the wall something’s breaking
Wearing white as you’re walkin’
Down the street of my soul

You take my self, you take my self control
You got me livin’ only for the night
Before the morning comes, the story’s told
You take my self, you take my self control

Another night, another day goes by
I never stop myself to wonder why
You help me to forget to play my role
You take my self, you take my self control

I, I live among the creatures of the night
I haven’t got the will to try and fight
Against a new tomorrow
so I guess I’ll just believe it
that tomorrow never comes

A safe night, I’m living in the forest of my dream
I know the night is not as it would seem
I must believe in something
so I’ll make myself believe it
That this night will never go

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Oh the night is my world
City light painted girl
In the day nothing matters
It’s the night time that flatters

You take myself, you take my self control
You got me living only for the night
Before the morning a story’s told
You take myself, you take my self control

I, I live among the creatures of the night
I haven’t got the will to try and fight
Against a new tomorrow
so I guess I’ll just believe it
that tomorrow never knows

A safe night, I’m living in the forest of a dream
I know the night is not as it would seem
I must believe in something
so I’ll make myself believe it
that this night will never go

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control
You take my self, you take my self control…

This song was first released in 1983 by the Italian composer and singer Raf (Raffaele Riefoli), who wrote it with Giancarlo Bigazzi and Steve Piccolo. His version was a low tempo ballad with Disco-Techno-Pop features, and was an early use of synthesizers.

Branigan is known for her 1982 hit “Gloria“, which is also based on an Italian Pop song, Top 10 “Solitaire” and for the number-one adult contemporary hit “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You”.

“Noria” – Nostalgic Version by Coco!

In the early 1970s Branigan was a member of the band, Meadow, which recorded one album in 1973 called The Friend Ship. The record was never re-released, and Branigan preferred not to discuss her involvement with Meadow publicly.

During the years after Meadow broke up, she had various jobs, including a stint as one of Leonard Cohen’s backup singers for his European tour.

“Breaking the Law”  by Judas Priest from “British Steel” – 1980

There I was completely wasting, out of work and down
all inside it’s so frustrating as I drift from town to town
feel as though nobody cares if I live or die
so I might as well begin to put some action in my life
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
So much for the golden future, I can’t even start
I’ve had every promise broken, there’s anger in my heart
you don’t know what it’s like, you don’t have a clue
if you did you’d find yourselves doing the same thing too
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
You don’t know what it’s like…..
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law……
